Government Funded Training Information
What is a traineeship? What are the employer responsibilities? Do students have to attend classes? And much much more!!
How does it work?
Existing workers (part time or full time) are enrolled into an approved course. They do not need to change their employment status, pay-rate etc but will be assessed for funding that falls under the traineeship stream of funding. A traineeship is a full-time or part-time employment based training arrangement. During the course of a traineeship, a staff member in employed paid work and has the opportunity to learn new skills in a hands-on environment. On successful completion, the staff member earns a nationally recognised qualification. This is a valuable first step to a rewarding career.
What is the difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship?
Traineeships are for existing workers as well as new entrants to the workplace. Traineeships include certificate and diploma training. Apprenticeships are for workers beginning a new trade.

There are no out of pocket costs for the employer or employee.

Generally speaking for a full time Certificate IV qualification you will have up to 24 months and a full time Diploma qualification is up to 36 months, however there are opportunities to complete the qualifications much sooner.
Can the traineeship be completed early?
If a candidate completes a qualification in less than the contracted term, they may be required to complete an early completion form, provided by The Apprenticeship Centre. There are no learning restrictions around early completion as outcomes and achievement of job competency is the paramount consideration. To receive the full funding from the Federal Government the qualification should not be completed in less than 3 months.
Do students have to attend classes?
The courses can be delivered entirely by one delivery method or by a combination of online, in a classroom, through correspondence or blended where the training is a mixture of online and classroom or workshop and correspondence. The traineeship is workplace based, resources, activities and reading materials are used to enhance the workplace learning and assist with developing underpinning skills and knowledge.
Do students have to sit exams?
No. The program is competency based. Assessment is based on portfolio of evidence, workplace assessments or online assessments.
What is the eligibility criteria to access Government Funded Training?
In order to apply for funding the applicant must meet the following criteria. Please note that I Want That Course does not determine eligibility, The Australian Apprenticeship Centre does. Applicants must:
- be employed full time or part time on a permanent basis
- have a supervisor above you in the workplace to monitor your training
- be an Australian citizen/ permanent resident or a NZ citizen with more than 6 months residency
- not have completed a Diploma qualification or higher
If my staff member leaves the company during the traineeship, what impact will this have on me?
If an employee leaves his/her employment at the beginning then the traineeship can simply be cancelled by either party within the first 30 days. If the employee leaves after 90 days of commencing the qualification than it means you will not receive the completion payment from the Federal Government, but you will also not have to pay I Want That Course the completion payment.
The trainee can recommence their qualification with their new employer and will have a maximum of 7 yrs to recommence. It is recommended to recommence within 12 months to reduce the chances of the training package changing and to ensure a smooth transition occurs.
