Proposal Writing
Short Course
Proposal Writing
This course is targeted at individuals and groups who require an understanding of how to structure, write, and finish a proposal. Proposals are required for various reasons. They may be for an internal or external audience. They can be in response to a specific request or can be an unsolicited attempt to sell a solution. They might be completed by one person or a team.
This workshop is focused on solicited proposals, i.e. a proposal issued in response to a request from an existing or prospective customer, being developed by one person. Note however that for speed you will work in teams.
This workshop will provide:
• An approach to the development of a typical proposal, with tips on structure, style etc;
• a quick refresher on some basic writing concepts (such as spelling, grammar, and paragraphs) – the things that we often miss especially when completing work under pressure; and
• some hints and tips on improving the appearance of your finished proposal.
There will be activities in as many areas as possible, to give you some practice in developing and structuring your proposal. Note you won’t be doing much actual writing - this is neither an English course nor a word processing course. We’ll also spend some time on polishing/reviewing – this is absolutely critical to a good proposal. Your first draft is never the final one – it can take several iterations before you get a quality proposal.
On completion of this course you will be able to:
• Understand the basic requirements for developing a proposal.
• Follow the approach provided to help develop focused, high-quality proposals.
• Utilise the tips and techniques to determine an appropriate structure to use for your proposals in different situations.
• Make good use of illustrations in your proposals.
• Define proofreading and understand the techniques in improving proofreading skills.
• Define peer review and list ways peer review can help improve your proposals.
• Notice (and correct) common spelling and grammar issues in your proposal writing.
• List guidelines in printing and publishing your proposal.
The Proposal Writing course covers, in detail, the following essential points of writing proposals:
• Punctuation
• Spelling
• Request for proposals
• The proposal writing process
This short course is delivered by distance learning and can be completed in just one day.
