Conifers are widely used as ornamental plants and timber trees. Some conifers even provide us with medicines, edible nuts and other useful products. This course was designed to teach you how to grow and use conifers and put you one step closer to becoming a conifer expert!
What will you achieve from this course?
After completing Conifers you will have the knowledge necessary to distinguish between different types of conifers in cultivation as well as understand the cultural requirements for commonly and lesser grown conifers including Australian natives and uncommon species.
Lessons:
- Introduction - The system of plant identification, general characteristics of the conifer plant group, information contacts
- Culture - Planting, staking, mulching, watering, pest & disease, feeding, pruning, protection from wind, salt air and propagation.
- Trees - Conifers that reach tree proportions, their characteristics and requirements, how to grow conifers by seed propagation and grafting techniques.
- Common Medium Size Shrubs - Chamaecyparis, Juniperus and Thuja. Pruning.
- Small Shrubs - How to choose small and prostrate conifers and their care. How to care for seedlings up to planting out stage.
- Australian Native Conifers - Araucaria, Callitris, Podocarpus are three good conifers for use. The importance of environmental zones in Australia a
- Rarer Conifers - Hemlocks, Podocarpus, Larches and leaf characteristcs of Cephalataxus.
- Using Conifers - As timber, oils, edible seed, christmas trees, etc.
